The Building: The Palazzo Antellesi is the second most significant landmark in Piazza Santa Croce, with foundations dating back to Roman times. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous transformations, acquiring its present form in the early seventeenth century when it became the noble residence of the influential Antellesi family, bankers to the Medici. The bust of Grand Duke Cosimo II de’ Medici above the entrance stands as a testament to the close ties between the ruling Medici family and their affluent financiers. The palazzo is also unique in Florence for its fully frescoed facade, which celebrates the Medici reign, and it houses a copy of Amorino Dormiente (Dormant Love) by Caravaggio, a piece once owned by the Antellesi family.
Over the past three centuries, the Palazzo Antellesi has changed ownership multiple times, reflecting the fortunes and misfortunes of its various buyers and sellers. In the mid-1950s, it was acquired by the Piccolomini family, one of Italy’s most historic lineages. The Piccolominis are descendants of two Popes, Pius II and Pius III, as well as Ascanio Piccolomini, a patron and protector of Galileo Galilei.

Piazza Santa Croce: The Beating Heart of Florence’s History & Culture
Nestled in the historic center of Florence, Piazza Santa Croce is one of the city's most iconic and vibrant squares. Known for its rich artistic heritage, lively atmosphere, and breathtaking architecture, this district offers an authentic Florentine experience, blending history, culture, and local charm.
A Square Steeped in History
At the heart of the piazza stands the magnificent Basilica of Santa Croce, one of Florence’s most important churches. This stunning Gothic masterpiece is not only an architectural gem but also the final resting place of legendary figures such as Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, and Machiavelli. Its stunning frescoes by Giotto and grand chapels make it a must-visit landmark.
A Hub of Art & Craftsmanship
The Santa Croce district has long been known for its artisanal workshops and traditional leather craftsmanship. Visitors can explore charming streets lined with boutique leather shops, goldsmiths, and antique stores, continuing a centuries-old tradition of Florentine craftsmanship. The nearby Scuola del Cuoio (Leather School) inside the Santa Croce complex offers an inside look at the city’s artisanal excellence.
A Vibrant Social Scene
Beyond its historical allure, Piazza Santa Croce is a lively social hub, surrounded by charming cafés, traditional trattorias, and upscale restaurants serving authentic Tuscan cuisine. Whether enjoying a leisurely aperitivo in the square or indulging in a classic bistecca alla fiorentina, the area offers a truly immersive Italian experience.
Events & Festivities
The piazza is also famous for hosting cultural events and festivals throughout the year. One of its most exciting traditions is the Calcio Storico Fiorentino, a historic football match dating back to the Renaissance, where players in traditional costumes compete in a dramatic display of strength and skill. During the holiday season, the Christmas market fills the square with festive lights, artisan stalls, and seasonal treats.
The Perfect Base for Exploring Florence
Located just a short walk from Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, and the Uffizi Gallery, Santa Croce is an ideal base for discovering Florence. With its romantic streets, cultural richness, and dynamic atmosphere, it offers the perfect balance between history and modern-day Florentine life. Whether you are drawn to its artistic treasures, lively piazza culture, or charming boutiques, Piazza Santa Croce embodies the soul of Florence—a place where past and present harmoniously coexist.
